I was first introduced to the work of today’s contributor, Isabelle van Zeijl, through the Young Masters Art Prize, which celebrates emerging and established contemporary artists who pay homage to the skill and innovation of the old masters. Isabelle is shortlisted for the prize this year and I can think of no one else who so perfectly encapsulates the idea behind it! Using self-portraiture as her chosen art form, Isabelle transforms herself into powerful women from the past, and then enhances the photograph digitally. The end results are stunning and call to mind Renaissance art and decoration, while still feeling really fresh and new. It is that mix of the modern and the antiquated that makes her work so interesting!

Isabelle’s photographs question our historical views of beauty and the role women have played throughout time. You can see more of her gorgeous work on her website and via The Cynthia Corbett Gallery. Read on to learn all about her inspirations. Thanks, Isabelle! ~Erin
